This photo of Chief Photographer Frank Pomeroy at the Coulee Dam Construction site was snapped by "Life Magazine" photographers, who regularly came to record construction progress throughout the years. Frank is pictured here with Weston meter slung around his neck and his Graflex "Speed Graphic" camera in hand, which was his work horse for many years. This website, dedicated to Frank Pomeroy on the occasion of his 94th birthday, commemorates the years he spent working for the United States Government recording a little piece of history photographically, is designed and published by his son. Frank Pomeroy started working on the Coulee Dam project shortly after it started, and remained on staff as the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation's Chief Photographer for the construction of Coulee Dam. Government photographers were never given credit or a by-line for their photographs, so you have probably have never heard of this great American photographer. But if you have ever seen any government pictures or movies of Coulee Dam Construction, you have probably seen his work. We invite you to browse and navigate through this site to learn about one historical photographer who made a contribution to the American way of life. |
